One In The World is a story about James McCone who, after 9/11, joins the marines with two of his best childhood friends, Tom and Dan Grane. After basic training, he and Dan and Tom are stationed in Bagdad and are recruited into the special forces. Dan and James are sent on a special mission to retrieve important lost information.
Meanwhile, at home, James’ wife Annie and his first-born son Ryan are sending letters back and forth to James.
One day, General Shardan comes to the McCone household and tells Annie that her husband died in a plane wreck. He hands her the only thing they found of him, his dog tags. Annie takes the tags, then smiles at General Shardan and says “ My husband isn’t dead. I won’t believe it.”
General Shardan responds “Mrs. McCone, you realize that there is a one in the world chance that your husband is still alive.”
Annie quickly responds “General Shardan, my husband is one in the world.”
The next day, Ryan asks Annie if he can send a letter to daddy. Annie tells him that they don’t know where daddy is right now, but he should write the letter anyway. His letter says:
“Dear daddy,
I love you. I miss you a lot too. Mommy says that we don’t know where you are right now, so I asked God. He told me that you are where you have always been, walking right by his side. So, I asked mommy to go ahead and send this anyway.
I love and miss you always.
Your loving son,
Ryan”
Back in the war zone, James and Dan are devising a plan to escape from their al-quida captors. Both are in ill health. They escape by finally going delirious, and their captures leave them behind when moving their other prisoners. James realizes that this is their only hope of survival. He thinks of his wife and his son, and then he looks at the man laying beside him in the sand. James remembers the times when Dan has saved his skin. And prays for strength. He musters enough to stand and pulls Dan to his feet, determined to get them both home safely.
Hours later, in the dark, James and Dan are holding each other up and stumbling as quickly as possible. They hear voices coming closer and hide behind a dessert bush. The voices come closer and start to bed down on the other side of the bush.
The unknowns settle and everything becomes still, but James and Dan are too afraid and tired to go on. Dan has been stifling his coughs but later on, one escapes and one of the people on the other side of the bush jumps up and grabs a flashlight and shines it toward the bush. The light blinds James’ and Dan’s eyes where they can’t see.
“Dan! James!” the voice exclaims. A pair of arms wrap around them and they look up to see Tom.
Tom had convinced his superiors to go look for them, since the info they held was extremely important.
Tom reaches into his coat and pulls out a worn piece of paper. It is the letter from Ryan. As James reads it, Tom says, “It was sent to our barracks right before I left looking for you. I took it for you, but I read it first. I’ve been searching for you for over a week. The only thing that kept me looking was that letter.”
James is reunited with his family after receiving an honorable discharge for his service. He and Dan manage to recover from their time with Al-Quida.
